News and things to do: Margate Film Festival, Creative Quests, fireworks

Rag’n’Bone Man has just released his new single Pocket, which comes with a video shot in Margate. Gaze at all the local landmarks and try to ignore the uncanny valley feeling brought on by the visual effects. Watch it here:

Like many arts organisations, Arts Education Exchange in Cliftonville has been hit by funding cuts. In order to keep providing its creative and therapeutic learning space for young people, who face barriers to accessing education, it has launched a crowdfunder. If you would like to offer some financial support, you can chip in here

Creative Quests, which runs events to unlock participants’ creativity, is planning something in Margate. You can be involved in helping to develop exactly what that might be. Creative Quests Margate will officially launch at the Margate Design Festival. There’ll be a talk from founder Sam Furness at 12.30pm on Sunday, October 27, then a ‘theme dreaming’ quest on Thursday, October 31 at 3pm. Tickets and info here

Margate Film Festival has announced its 2024 programme, and it’s looking great. Among the films set to be screened are Molly Manning Walker’s excellent How To Have Sex and Sinéad O’Connor documentary Nothing Compares. The festival takes place November 27 to December 1 at Ark and the Tom Thumb Theatre. See the full programme here

The Design Museum in London’s new exhibition The World Of Tim Burton has just opened and runs through to April next year. Pulled from Burton’s personal archive, the collection features a wide range of work created from his childhood to the present day. Full details and tickets here

New curated film and food night Cinelupa will screen The Last Resort at Bar Nothing on Tuesday, October 29, with a Polish menu provided by The Perfect Place To Grow. Filmed in Margate and released in 2000, the movie tells the story of a woman and her son forced to claim asylum after arriving in the UK. It’s a bleak but excellent film, and features an early appearance from Paddy Considine. Tickets are just £8 plus booking fee

Quite a lot of film-related stuff there. How about a little more? The First Flights Short Film Fund, supported by Kodak, is now open for submissions. Open to filmmakers worldwide, it offers grants of up to £7,000 to go towards production costs. Your finished film will also be considered for next year’s Raindance Film Festival, as well as other benefits. Let’s get some of that money shunted over to Thanet. Apply here

The Brewing Brothers taproom on Folkestone’s Beachside Harbour Arm will be putting on a free fireworks display on Saturday, November 2. The show will start at 7pm but arrive early to get a good spot.

One of our absolute favourites, singer-songwriter Anna B Savage will be returning to Where Else in Margate on February 19. Her new album You & I are Earth is out on January 24. New single Agnes is out now and wonderful. Get tickets right this instant, obviously.

Still going strong, the excellent Young Knives have announced that they will be coming to Ramsgate Music Hall on Monday, January 27. Their new album Landfill is out on January 25, and they’ve just released its first single, Dissolution. Yep, they’re still great. Tickets on sale for £22.50 now

Margate’s own superstar poet Harry Baker will be up in London for two special Christmas shows at the Bloomsbury Theatre this December. Joining him on both nights will be Rob Auton, Georgie Jones and Joshua Idehen. The first night on Tuesday, December 10 has already sold out, but a second on December 11 has just been added. Tickets are £18

Also at Bar Nothing, Harmony is a new night for women, trans and non-binary musicians to meet and connect. Hosted by Lo Barnes, the first edition will take place on November 6, 6-8pm and on the first Wednesday of each month after that. Follow on Instagram for updates. 

Leeds Castle near Maidstone will once again go all out with the Christmas lights this year, covering its grounds and the castle itself with a collection of illuminated art installations. It runs from November 22 to January 1. There’ll also be a chance to meet Santa and warm yourself at various street food stalls. Details and tickets here

The next Chump’s comedy night will take place at Where Else in Margate on Wednesday, November 20. On the bill are Spencer Jones, Helen Bauer and Celya AB. Top stuff. Get yer £15 tickets here. While we’re on the subject of Chump’s, they’ve also got an incredible line up of shows booked in for the new year, featuring full performances from Sarah Keyworth, Catherine Bohart, Jake Lambert, Paddy Young and Jamali Maddix. A long way off but worth noting now if you have dinosaur obsessed kids, the brilliant Dinosaur World Live will be at Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre on August 15-17 next year. The Olivier award-winning show features incredible, life-sized puppets that always delight (yes, we’ve seen it more than once!). Book tickets here

This year’s Margate Festival of Design gets underway at The Margate School today, running until October 31. Check out the MFD website for more info.

MixMatched, a monthly performance night among other things that has as focus on neurodivergent inclusivity, has a creative writing workshop at Margate’s Shell Grotto today at midday and a spoken word night at Sundowners on Wednesday October 30.

This year’s Cockles & Muscles Halloween Ball at Margate Arts Club takes place tonight. It’s waiting list only at the moment, but try your luck

Not into waiting lists but don’t mind travelling? You could head up to The Divine in Dalston for its own Halloween Ball tonight. It’s free entry before 9pm or £15 after. 

Musician Peter Gill will perform the best-loved songs by American satirist songwriter Tom Lehrer at the Sarah Thorne Theatre in Broadstairs tonight. Tickets are £18

Turner Contemporary hosts a conversation about apples, on Sunday, October 27 at 3pm, with exhibiting artist Anya Gallaccio and tree expert Peter Hasted and apple grower Donna Cooper. It’s free, but be nice and book

Betteshanger Park near Deal is hosting a Halloween drive-in cinema from October 28 to November 3. There will be two family-friendly screenings per day, as well as an evening adults-only line up of horror flicks

Producer Taahliah will perform her debut electroacoustic show heavenrise at the ICA in London on Wednesday, October 30. Tickets are £20.50.

Having made our picks of Thanet’s best pub quizzes, The Royston in Broadstairs holds its first quiz of the season on Wednesday, October 30. Drop into the bar to book - entry is £5 per person.

Head over to Streets on Thursday, October 31 for a special food collaboration. Mario from Casa will be making up mini pizza bases ready to be topped and fried by Streets’ chef Julian Brown.
