Things to do: Daylight Music, Halloween fun, lots of food
Margate Leisure Centre has announced that it has permanently closed following “a challenging summer”. The bar and events space was also home to Black Axe Throwing and Klak Boule. Read the statement here.
Arctic Circle’s Daylight Music shows have been staged at London’s Union Chapel for fifteen years, and more recently at The Hot Tin in Faversham. Now the daytime gigs are coming to more venues, including Ark in Cliftonville. The first show there on Sunday, October 6, will feature performances from The Gentle Good, Liz Ikamba, and Alice Boyd. Suggested ticket price is £12, but entry is on a pay-what-you-can basis. Book and listen to each performer here.
Incredible South Asian home cook takeaway maker Rakookoo will be back at Twenty Seven Harbour Street in Broadstairs for another sit down dinner on Wednesday, October 16. Among the items on the menu will be beef short rib and coriander curry, grilled hispi cabbage, and fig leaf panna cotta. Places are £40 per person. Book here.
Local artists Charlie Russell and Alice Walton will be holding a joint exhibition at Margo McDaid’s 35 Addington Street gallery in Ramsgate from November 21. Charlie is known for her goddess ceramic sculptures, while Alice is an abstract artist. See their post announcing the show here.
Séte wine bar in Cliftonville will be holding a Pink Party on Saturday, October 12. Head down between 2-6pm for a menu of pink wine and pink snacks. Come dressed in pink and they’ll give you a drink.
Having made our picks of Thanet’s best pub quizzes, The Royston in Broadstairs holds its first quiz of the season on Wednesday, October 30. It’ll have a spooky theme, and there’ll be a £20 bar tab for the most scarily dressed participant. There’s a cash prize for the winning team, and the event will raise money for Broadstairs Town Shed. Drop into the bar to book - entry is £5 per person.
New hot dog outlet Daisy’s Dogs will be opening up in Margate’s Old Kent Market on Saturday, October 12. Don’t have many more details than that, but who needs details when you can watch a hot dog skating around a carpark?
The Doc N Roll music documentary film festival will be holding screenings around the UK between October 24 and November 10. None in Kent, sadly. However, we know that Jeffrey Lewis has a fervent fanbase around these parts (if his packed shows at Where Else are anything to go by). So, one event you might want to check out is the UK premiere of Illya Popenko’s new film Roll Bus Roll: A Jeffrey Lewis Documentary at the Hackney Picturehouse on Friday, November 6. Windmill Community Gardens in Margate will hold its annual family-focussed Halloween Pumpkin Party on Tuesday, October 29. There will be spooky activities - including pumpkin carving, a fancy dress parade, and homemade food. Adult tickets are £6 and £1 for kids. Pumpkins for carving cost and additional £3.50. Book here.
Author Gabby Dawnay and illustrator Alex Barrow will be at the Happy Reading children’s bookshop in Broadstairs on Saturday, October 12. Hear Gabby read the duo’s new book If I Had A Dragon, while Alex paints images onto the shop’s windows. Tickets cost £5 and include a signed copy of the book.
Streets and Casa Pizza in Cliftonville have announced a special collaboration on Thursday, October 31. Taking place at Streets, Mario from Casa will be making up mini pizza bases ready to be topped and fried by Streets’ chef Julian Brown. You can wash it all down with music from DJ Massimo Lamagna (and wine).
C.R.I.M.P is coming to Oast in Cliftonville on Tuesday, November 12 - a four course supper club celebrating pie. There will be puffs, there will be vol-au-vents, there will be delicious pie, and then if you aren’t done in by all that pastry, you’ll finish with a chocolate cherry ice cream bombe.
